A Couple Meditations or Chants
June 1, 2008
For the occasions when you feel you need a ritual or chant to get centered again (like those stressful times when you are barely managing to satisfy the demands and needs of job/family/house/school/self/God), I dug up a couple items for you. One is a Buddhist meditation or chant, and the other is a Navajo prayer.
A traditional Buddhist meditation called ‘Lovingkindness’:
Think of yourself, or bring to mind someone you love, or even someone you dislike, and mentally repeat, “May you (or may I) be happy. May you be peaceful and at ease. May your heart be filled with loving-kindness. May you be well.”
The other is a Navajo chant:
“The Earth, its life am I. The Earth, its feet are my feet. The Earth, its legs are my legs. The Earth, its body is my body. The Earth, its thoughts are my thoughts. The Earth, its speech is my speech.”
The first may be directed at a person who is an anchor to your life, a spouse, mentor, or even a boss. After all, one’s home life is miserable if things are not going well for the significant other. All the frustrations get taken out on whoever one lives with. So wish each other a good day, and I mean really wish each other a Great Day. The same goes for the boss upon whom your job depends; wish him or her well, think to yourself that he/she is a wonderful loving person, one who is decent and loved by all, even if there is no evidence of this in the office, and see what happens.
The second encourages not only a sense of oneness with the All, but a sense of stewardship of the spaceship Earth. After all, you would not knowingly hurt your own body, would you? You would not put garbage or poison in it, or cut off a limb and toss it away, would you? Because if so, we really gotta work on you. But most folks try to avoid making themselves sick or giving themselves pain, and a feeling of oneness with the planet one lives on can only lead to good, clean, green, sustainable agriculture, business, homes, and cities.
