Your Milky Way Horoscope Jan. 9-15, 2011

Happy New Year of 2011 to you, in case I forgot to say that. We are sliding towards 2012 more and more quickly it seems, without a lot of time to sit and figure out what 2012 is supposed to mean, if anything. I have been re-reading some of Barbara Hand Clow’s books, like Catastrophobia and The Mayan Code, both of which touch on the Mayan calendar although the latter is much more focused on that.

The current Mayan year actually runs from Nov. 3, 2010 to Oct. 28, 2011 (according to the Calleman version of the Mayan calendar). It is Day 7, or Heaven 13, called Fruition. It is a 360-day year, even though the Maya also had a 365-day year for agricultural purposes so they would know when to plant.

So that brings up the question why did the Maya have a 360-day sacred year (as did several other cultures) when they ‘knew better’? My answer is that the circle has 360 degrees, that’s why. The sacred circles of the year were far easier to calculate and track by using the 360-degree circle, like any good geometry student. The astrology wheel has 360 degrees, and the fact that the earth year has 365 and a quarter days is no reason to change it.

AMENDED TO ADD: I meant to give a link to Ms. Hand Clow’s website, which is at

Mercury sextiles Neptune about 3 pm Monday, and then squares Uranus in Pisces at 7:13 pm. Neptune is often tricky to use, but here I think that manual or writing dexterity may be helped by this aspect. Artists may find the brush works better for them, or dancers may find it easier to learn a routine. The square to Uranus is also tricky, but if you are lucky, you may have a knack for coining a phrase or gaining insights (possibly accidentally).

Mars sextiles Jupiter at 7:35 pm Thursday, helping spread an appetite for risk and (sometimes) some luck ensuing from that risk. Most of us will be content to try a new spin on our ice skates or ski boards.

Mars leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius at 5:41 pm Saturday. The flavors of the week may change during the NFL playoffs on the following Sunday, with a few surprises in store for the pundits. Mars here is very at home with team sports and team efforts, and some teams may belatedly gel their offensive efforts for the winning points.

BTW if you would like to read a bit about the Jan. 4 eclipse, try this link to the AstroAmerica newsletter. If you click on this after Jan. 8, you will find the Jan. 4 edition in the Archives (click on archives to select a date). Eclipse path he says is from western Africa to Scandinavia to Russia to Mongolia. Peak seems to be in Sweden, and that is apropos because Sweden is in the news due to hubbub over Wikileaks founder. Sweden’s 1523 chart puts Pluto at 15 Cap – very near the eclipse degree of 13 Capricorn.

Readers can follow not only their Sun sign horoscope but also the sign of their Ascendant for further clues to how your week will develop. Also note: some aspects are exact on a weekend but may find opportunity for expression on the Friday or Monday nearest the exact aspect. Times given are in Eastern Standard or Eastern Daylight Savings Time depending on the season.

ARIESMarch 20-April 19 – The Moon is in Aries from 10:24 am Monday till Wednesday night. The Moon-Venus trine at 5:27 pm Monday could bring a favorable award in a legal matter or a nice review of your book. The Moon-Saturn opposition on Tuesday night, however, does NOT favor a followup dinner with someone new, and an established partnership could be cold and frustrating. The Moon squares Mars at 6 pm Wednesday, and according to Jim Shawvan, from then till a Moon-Mercury trine at 9:47 pm is an opportunity period to get a lot done.

TAURUSApril 20-May 20 – The Moon is in Taurus from 10:37 pm Wednesday till Saturday morning. The Moon in Taurus trines Pluto in Capricorn (which will soon be joined by Mercury). Serious ninth house matters may rule the week, things like getting a final verdict in a legal matter, writing a will, taking back your manuscript and self-publishing, asking the ultimate religious or philosophical questions. All of these may be on your mind. Mars in Capricorn sextiles Jove in Pisces Thursday night, and Sun in Capricorn trines your transiting Moon on Friday night. Good progress may come in legal matters or publishing, etc those days, and a friend may be instrumental in that on Thursday. Saturday morn has more helpful aspects than frustrating ones, so use this opportunity period to brainstorm with friends or look for an agent or editor,

GEMINIMay 21-June 20 – The Moon is in Gemini from 8:23 am Saturday thru the weekend. Saturday may ask you to brainstorm how to adapt or adjust materials to current needs (yours or a customer’s). By next Sunday, you will be hard at work on that project. Mars enters Aquarius on Saturday night, compatible by angle and element. Legal disputes may be at issue, possibly culminating on Jan. 19. Mars here heightens competition for college scholarships or league games, also efforts to whip a manuscript into shape can involve discussion over where you and the publisher want to go with the script.

CANCERJune 21-July 22 – Sunday, Jan. 9 is very harmonious with your natal planets. While Moon in Pisces is awkwardly inconjunct Saturn in Libra (Saturn squaring your Sun may press you into activity, even if only so you can cross off items on your do-list) – the Moon also sextiles Sun-Mars in Capricorn, the sign of partners. Your mate may be sunny and energetic, wanting to do things with you. Let him help finish dishes quickly, then go for a walk or swim at the Y. Moon in Pisces squares Mercury early Monday, then joins up with Uranus and Jupiter by commute time. What the heck, stop in for a quick-pick lottery tickee on the commute – ya never know. This is in your solar ninth house, ruling publishing, law, religion, college, the internet. You may find a great, affordable program at an online college.

LEOJuly 23-Aug. 22 – Moon in Aries is very energizing for you from midday Monday till late Wednesday. Moon in Aries trines Venus in Sag at 5:27 pm Monday; add your natal planets to make a grand fire trine, ta dah!. And who will be able to resist you then? NO ONE! Fire trines favor entertaining, sales, inspirational work or motivational speeches, sports, leadership. Mars enters your opposing sign Aquarius Saturday afternoon; your mate may be argumentative or competitive; make things into a friendly game if your spouse insists on a point of contention.

VIRGOAug. 23-Sept. 22 – Your ruling planet Mercury (in direct motion now) enters Capricorn on Thursday morn, a comfortable and practical place for you. You might get some brainstorms on how to teach your kids practical how-to skills, or enjoy planning out your spring garden. Moon in Taurus trines Sun in Capricorn at 10:16 pm Friday; add your natal planets for a grand earth trine. Earth trines favor building things: a house, a company, products of the hands or mind.

LIBRASept. 23-Oct. 22 – Moon opposite Saturn in Libra on Tuesday night can be frustrating. A kind woman may help you figure out work-arounds or adaptations to limitations on Sunday morning or on Friday morn. Mars enters air-sign Aquarius on Saturday afternoon; an interesting guy may float into your romantic fifth-house sector. Natch, it can also signify arguments with a current beau, so get the hang of avoiding nagging and instead challenging him to back up his claims. Put up or shut up, in other words.

SCORPIOOct. 23-Nov. 21 – Moon is in compatible Pisces Sunday-Monday. You can get a LOT done on Sunday if you want, and it won’t even seem like work. Luck may strike Monday when Moon conjoins Jove and windfall Uranus early in the day. It’s also an opportunity period according to Jim Shawvan, from 4:43 am till Moon enters Aries at 10:24am. Beware a cash crunch Tuesday, tho, when Mercury in Sag (your solar second house) squares Jupiter in your fifth house. Have cash on hand, and transfer funds into working accounts so it’ll be there when you need it.

SAGITTARIUSNov. 22-Dec. 21 – Moon is in compatible Aries Monday-Wednesday. The Moon trines Venus in your sign Monday evening, making it seem like a late Christmas almost. A late gift could arrive by mail, possibly from overseas, or a visitor could bring it in person. Mercury enters your solar second house (Capricorn) on Thursday morning. This can bring checks as well as bills, also extra work for anything from bookkeeping, hand crafts, writing, editing, and business-related travel.

CAPRICORNDec. 22-Jan. 19 – Mercury enters your sign at 6:25 am Thurs., Jan. 13. It doesn’t make an aspect till it opposes the Moon in Cancer 12:45 am Tues., Jan. 18 (and joins Pluto). Your powers of analysis and ability to solve puzzles will be acute. Whether you merely dive into a mystery novel, or write your own, is up to you.

AQUARIUSJan. 20-Feb. 17 – Mars enters your sign on Saturday at 5:41 pm. You are prodded out of your chair to join team sports, to join a health club, or perhaps to tackle the job jar with some creative projects around the house. Moon in Aries is compatible Monday-Wednesday. A neighborhood friend or relative may invite you for cake or fun Monday night. And a fun conversation flows on Wednesday night with another friend; don’t miss that call.

PISCESFeb. 18-March 19 – The Moon is in Pisces from Sunday till mid-morn Monday. Your Sunday at-home brunch plans will have to be juggled while you figure out how to do without a key ingredient. But midday has two fine sextiles, the Moon in Pisces to Sun and Mars in Capricorn. Sporty or competitive activities with friends will be loads of fun. Monday may be marred by tongue-twisting under a Moon-Mercury square early morning. But the Moon joins Jove and Uranus for happy surprises the same morning.

A gift to my lovely readers —

As a special gift to my readers I thought you might enjoy some background music. A terrific writer and geek found these archived radio recordings of the Beatles for a Swedish radio show way back when. He cleaned them up a bit and edited them, and here they are. Five songs in cool condition. So turn up the volume alright already.
