Transiting Mars and Saturn Conjunct in First House Scorpio, A Personal Narrative

By Milky Way Maid
Experiencing a Mars and Saturn conjunction this year was a first-ever event for me. My ascendant is Scorpio, which is just where the conjunction was to occur. I thought maybe there was some chance of an accident, but I did not feel particularly fearful.
First let’s get some details out of the way.
The Mars-Saturn conjunction was on August 25, 2014, at 17 degrees Scorpio. The exact time was 3:30 pm Eastern. Coincidentally, there was a New Moon that day: 2 degrees 19′ of Virgo at 10:13 am. Mars and Saturn sextiled Mercury earlier in the day. Also, four days later (Aug. 29) the Sun opposed Neptune which was at 6 degrees Pisces.
None of these points were conjunct any natal planets, but 17 degrees Scorpio closely opposes my natal Sun and applies to my natal North Node – the latter seems to be rather auspicious. The New Moon was sextile my natal Ascendant and trine natal Mars. So the outlook seemed to be on the whole pretty positive, even if I had trouble guessing what kind of event might take place.
ALSO- 17 degrees Scorpio is exactly square my natal Chiron in Aquarius. Chiron in Aquarius has accounted for some arthritis in the knees and other ailments and injuries in that area. This time around, the square to Chiron seems to indicate a surgical intervention of some kind, but I thought some other transiting aspects referred to a series of injections to the knees that started in August. Turns out, I was in for some other surgeries besides those injections, even though they were all quite minor. Minor, yes, but for me it was very unusual to have such a cluster of medical interventions.

Your Milky Way Horoscope JULY 20-26, 2014

By Milky Way Maid

Dear Readers– Please visit the website of the National Blood Clot Alliance at to learn more about blood clots and when you might need to see a doctor about it.

A busy week this last full week of July! Planets making stations, planets changing signs, plus a New Moon! Read on for more.

Saturn is Stationary Direct at 4:36 pm Sunday. It is at 16 degrees 39′ Scorpio. During the retrograde phase we restructured some parts of our lives (or should have). We should have decided to take responsibility for our actions, and for the results of those actions. Setting boundaries is another side of Saturn, a necessary task if we are to avoid being used by others. We might set up a more demanding schedule for ourselves, something that requires more of us than just keeping up with mundane chores. Fixed signs like Scorpio are usually pretty stubborn, and Saturn going direct in such a sign helps you to stick to your guns, aim at a goal, and follow through on promises.
Uranus is Stationary Retrograde at 10:53 pm Monday. It is at 16 degrees 30′ Aries, which is coincidentally inconjunct the Saturn station the day before; inconjuncts sometimes mean things come out of nowhere – life pulls the rug out from under us. Uranus stations tend to make things pretty chaotic for a few days. The Uranus retrograde makes us think twice about doing something outrageous, which may be a good thing. And yet we might plow ahead and go out of our way to upset an apple cart or two. If it contacts a natal planet, we may have trouble finding our niche in life; the energies of that planet contacted may be frustrated. We feel that we are different; well of course we are unique in some way, but we feel we are so different that the society has no place for us. At the very least, we feel uncomfortable about the status quo and start wishing things were different. Dane Rudhyar says the Uranus retrograde involves some kind of Visitation from the Spirit, as the individuality unfolds to a truer expression of the light within.
Mercury at 11 degrees Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn at 2:47 am Tuesday. This sounds like a great transit for research, or for grilling someone for information. You can drill down through layers of data to find the telling details that solve a puzzle.
The Sun enters its home in Leo at 5:41 pm Tuesday. It promptly conjoins Jupiter at 4:44 pm Thursday. Sun in Leo is spontaneous, outgoing, vain, attention-getting, a glutton for approval, and loves to be made a fuss over. But when they turn the spotlight on others, their warmth brings out the Leo in them, too. Likes to be in a position of authority, and makes a good manager in spite of being bored with details and repetition. Leos are magnetic as they draw others to them, especially pulling guests into their home for very entertaining parties. Famous people with the Sun in Leo include: Jackie Kennedy Onassis, poet Percy Shelley, playwright George Bernard Shaw, Napoleon, comedienne Lucille Ball, chef Julia Child, Fidel Castro, James Baldwin, baseball manager Casey Stengel, Paul Tillich, Eero Saarinen, Mussolini, aviator Amelia Earhart, rocker Mick Jagger, David Baldacci, Annie Oakley, director Cecil B DeMille, sprinter Usain Bolt, and Fritz Freleng.
Sun conjunct Jupiter: Natives with this transit expand their horizons in some way, whether by travel, a new job, gaining a more optimistic outlook, studying philosophy or law, or widening their network of contacts. Sometimes they become the star of the show, maybe it’s on a very private, off-off-off-the-beaten-path stage but it’s theirs.
Venus at 7 degrees Cancer trines Neptune in Pisces at 7:10 am Thursday. This is the classic in-love-with-love aspect. Try to keep your feet on the ground when being charmed by the new beau. You can also tune in to others in a very empathetic way, making them feel that someone really understands them. This is a great transit for expressing yourself in painting, music, poetry, photography, and any other art or craft. Visit a gallery for inspiration!
Mercury at 16 degrees Cancer squares retrograde Uranus in Aries at 8:07 pm Thursday; it immediately trines Saturn in Scorpio at 10:11 pm the same night. Mercury in a water sign is very fast, so when it squares Uranus you can sure expect things to happen in a hurry. Caution: this is an accident-prone transit so be careful driving and watch your head! Your mind may work very fast today, which means you need to check your work the next day. Make notes of your thoughts to think thru later, make a to-do list to stay on track. Nerves can be jittery, so it might be wise to stay off the caffeine; you will definitely NOT need the extra stimulation today. Try to watch yourself for impulsiveness, even rashness; signal before changing lanes, for example.
Mars enters Scorpio, where it is co-ruler, at 10:25 pm Friday. Mars in Scorpio wants control of his environment. Often Scorpios wind up in some type of managerial position, maybe just so they can order their own chair and organize things the way they prefer in their office. Can learn to coax others into talking about their goals by revealing (at least partially) one of their own motives or intentions. Scorpio natives will find this transit lends steel to their goals, turning you into that irresistible force that overturns immovable objects. Could also be vengeful, unless you have transformed into the eagle rather than the scorpion. Your taste may turn towards horror movies and the like. Mars in Scorpio is apt at using sharp tools, whether as a butcher or as a surgeon. Famous people with Mars in Scorpio include: Jean-Paul Sartre, Robert Louis Stevenson, George Washington, Eleanor Roosevelt, Alan Jay Lerner, Jonas Salk, Mohandas Gandhi, and Robert F. Kennedy.
We have a New Moon at 3 degrees 52′ Leo at 6:42 pm Saturday. The Moon conjoined Jupiter three hours earlier, and the Moon’s next aspect is a trine to Uranus at 8:14 pm the following Sunday, July 27. Moon-Jupiter expands the self to embrace the whole world of experience, law, scholarship, travel, and the arts, and the trine to Uranus eases expression of our insights into whatever forms is available to us. We will probably have our eyes opened to other ways of living, and implement new ways of doing things. We may plan a trip to foreign shores, or even get on the boat or plane. We run into people who are very different from ourselves, and we like them a lot!

Your Milky Way Horoscope March 23-29, 2014

By Milky Way Maid

Dear Readers– I continue to recover from an episode of blood clots on the lungs. Thanks for your good thoughts and get-well wishes. Please visit the website of the National Blood Clot Alliance at to learn more about blood clots and when you might need to see a doctor about it.

Mercury at 11 degrees Pisces trines Jupiter in Cancer at 9:11 am Wednesday. Jupiter is the higher octave of Mercury since both are mental planets; that means this should be a fine day for studies, for enrolling in the right college program for you, or for finding a teacher or tutor or guru.
Mercury at 13 degrees Pisces sextiles Pluto in Capricorn at 1:30 am Friday. Mercury and Pluto together are excellent for digging down thru research files, doing forensic accounting, or any other type of detective work.
Venus at 22 degrees Aquarius trines Mars in Libra at 3:05 pm Saturday. As you can probably guess Venus and Mars in any harmonious aspect favor romantic relationships, or actually any type of close partnership. It is even good for buying or selling, if they rule the buyer and seller in a horary chart.
Venus at 22 degrees Aquarius squares Saturn in Scorpio at 5:14 pm Saturday. Venus with Saturn can be either good or bad; it can mean a difficult time in a relationship, or it can mean formalizing the relationship with an engagement or wedding. The square tends to accent the stresses, a separation or perhaps having to work hard at clearing up problems.

Using Astrology to Predict the Number of Children One Will Have

by Milky Way Maid
One of the most popular questions in any astrological life reading consultation is how many children one is likely to have.
The best technique I have seen to handle this question is one promoted by prominent astrologer Carol Rushman. We will take a few charts and see how her method works.
The method is as follows:
1- Assuming you have drawn up an accurate birth chart, look to the fifth house of children. Determine the traditional ruler of the sign on the cusp of the fifth house.
Note that we will use the traditional rulers, although in the case of signs that have gained a modern ruling planet with the discovery of more planets in our solar system, we will of course try using the new ruler to see what that yields.
This means that the ruler we will use for Pisces is Jupiter, for Aquarius is Saturn, and for Scorpio is Mars.
2- Determine how many planets that ruler is APPLYING to. For the purposes of this exercise, we use only the classical aspects of conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. Do not count the semi-sextile or inconjunct.
So, for example, if the ruler of the fifth house is Venus at 10 degrees Cancer, and it is applying to a sextile to Mercury in Virgo, a square to Jupiter in Libra, a trine to Pluto in Scorpio, and an opposition to Saturn in Capricorn, then that would mean a potential for four children.

Your Milky Way Horoscope Aug. 4-10, 2013

By Milky Way Maid

The Sun at 12 degrees Leo trines Uranus in Aries at 11:05 am Sunday. You’re full of restless energy under this transit. You may have sudden interest or sudden insights into subjects like the sciences, electronics, computers, psychology, the occult in general and astrology in particular. But you will not be able to just sit in a chair and read about these subjects. You will want to get up and out and try things out for yourself. Kind of like good ol’ Ben Franklin going out in the storm with a kite. . .
We have a New Moon at 5:51 pm Wednesday at 14 degrees, 35′ Leo – virtually on top of the asteroid Vesta. The Moon trines Uranus at midday and Jupiter is applying to the opposition to Pluto. There’s a lot of focused energy on Leo this week and month, so pay attention to what sector this occupies in your natal chart. If your tenth house, you may find a new job or otherwise be in the spotlight. If fifth house, children and creative pursuits are energized.
Jupiter at 9 degrees Cancer opposes Pluto in Capricorn at 7:34 pm Wednesday. Jupiter is also conjunct Pallas Athena, the professional, the career girl, the lawyer or ombudsman or other expert advisor. You may need the lawyer because this transit often signifies trouble with the law – so it is imperative to observe all the rules and regulations, or face the music.
Mercury enters Leo at 8:13 am Thursday. Sometimes Leo acts as if what he has to say is more important than anyone else’s thoughts. Leos do have a theatrical effect when they speak, altho this can either enhance or destroy the impact of what they say depending on whether they really believe their own message. But when they remember to express all the love they have for humanity in that big heart of theirs, they can lift everyone up and inspire true loyalty. When you think about it, mind (Mercury) plus heart (Leo) is just about unbeatable, and makes others really sit up and listen. Obviously the stage is one place where this Mercury can express itself, but the classroom is just as good a “stage”, too; some may prefer roles behind the scenes such as directing or designing sets.
Famous people with Mercury in Leo include: singers Jimmy Dean, Eddie Fisher, Merv Griffin (before he hosted a talk show), trumpeter Louis Armstrong, artist Marc Chagall, coach Casey Stengel, drummer Ringo Starr, writer Ernest Hemingway, and dictator Napoleon Bonaparte.

Mercury Retrograde Struck Again! Trip to Nowhere for Would-Be Conference Attendee

by Milky Way Maid

Mercury retrograde created a true nightmarish Trip to Nowhere for a young would-be attendee of a three-day conference. He arrived at BWI airport on June 27, in time for a departing flight which was delayed two hours. He then arrived in time for a connecting flight in Dallas-Ft. Worth, only to learn that it was cancelled! June 27 was the day after Mercury made its retrograde station.

No flight is scheduled that day but he is given a flight the following day for Atlanta; he spends the night thanks to a hotel voucher. This flight is again delayed but takes off. The bad news is that he misses his connection to Portland and again spends the night in a hotel.

This means he would arrive just as the weekend convention closes. Ha ha, Mercury laughs up his sleeve at the unfortunate traveler. He never made it to Portland, having truly experienced the worst of airline travel. On top of everything else, an airline initially refused him any refund because they said he was a “No Show” (for a flight that had been cancelled)!!!

For all the details on this nightmarish trip, you may go to

The Best Book About Ancient Astronomy that isn’t about astrology, per se

One of the best books I can recommend to anyone interested in learning how and why ancient peoples kept track of sky markers is one that has nothing to do with astrology. The book is “America B.C.” by Barry Fell, who is a bit of a renegade when it comes to attributing ancient peoples with the ability to make notations of the important stuff like the spring equinox.

One of the most interesting and exciting parts of the book are where he explains the translation of the strange markings above a rock doorway in old New England. First I have to explain that Mr. Fell is a bit of a radical in that he believes that peoples from ancient Celtic and Mediterranean lands were able to reach North America and left written records on stone markers and monuments. But he has shown that the attempted translations of these markings result in coherent astronomical or historical statements.

As a special gift to my readers I thought you might enjoy some background music.
