Supposedly William Lilly wrote about the Void-of-course moon in the 1600s in his book “Christian Astrology”, but for some reason astrologers stopped talking about it and it became a lost secret. Revived by Al Morrison centuries later in a lengthy campaign that more resembled a siege, it finally regained a measure of its former glory.
People wrote in to Mr. Morrison with their experiences using the moon sheets provided by Morrison. Supposedly a banker used it to decide whether to grant loans or not; he refused to grant loans if they asked during a void-of-course moon. He asked for more information from the applicants. And supposedly that banker became a vice-president of the bank because of his sterling loan management success. We will never know if he would have become vice-president anyway without the moon charts, but those are the breaks in the astrology biz.

Sunday the 26 of December is known as Boxing Day; this year it features the Sun conjunct Pluto at 5 degrees of Capricorn. This aspect helps one not only remake oneself, but can help you discover your own power to make or remake your life. Pluto is also sometimes called the wipeout planet; in this case you can wipe the slate clean and start over. Or you can clear out everything that you no longer need or use, and enjoy having enough room to breathe.
Mars in Capricorn squares Saturn at 16 degrees of Libra at 10:29 am Wednesday. Mars-Saturn squares often are accompanied by breakage, including of bones. Be careful out there, be safety conscious, and put salt on icy sidewalks.
That square comes the day before Mercury goes in direct motion, at 19 degrees, 38 minutes of Sag, at 2:21 am Thursday. Exercise the usual caution a few days before and after the direct station, as these are prime periods for rushed work and errors.
Friday has a lovely Moon-Venus conjunction in Scorpio, so assuming you get through the last days of the year in good order, you can relax with your significant other – preferably at home with the romantic dinner (or breakfast, as it is exact at 8:11 am Friday) of your choice.
NEW YEAR’S EVE: The worm turns. Saturn is rising in a chart for midnight, creating a rather serious and sober mood. The South Node at 2 degrees of Cancer is high at the Midheaven (6 degrees), which sometimes signifies the least-likely-to-succeed wins it all. (It was located there when 50-1 long-shot Mine That Bird won the Kentucky Derby.) So take a flyer on the door prize or buy the quick-pick lotto ticket, ‘cuz you never know. (Pluto and the nodes square the Ascendant, creating opportunity to remake one’s self and one’s life, go from rags to riches or vice-versa.)
The Moon at 2 degrees of optimistic and freewheeling Sag is also inconjunct the South Node, another indicator of an upset in the making. The public (Moon) is surprised by the outcome of events. This is akin to New Orleans upset of Indianapolis in last year’s Super Bowl. The Moon is also sextile the Ascendant at 5 degrees Libra. Do you have any natal planets or angles at 2 to 6 degrees of a sign? The year could get off to a very interesting start!
Yikes, I have a natal chart with 3 degrees rising, trining Mars at the same degree, and square Uranus in Leo also at 3 degrees. Hmmm, I will have to set aside a few singles for the Lotto and whatever else there is. Will see if I can find any events at New Year’s at any local spots. Wish me luck, guys, I really need it. I have felt so jinxed these last six months or so.
PS: Well, so far this was not a good week for me. I was sick a good part of the week with chills – in bed, in fact – and offline much of the rest of the time. So I did not finish the column. Please forgive me. Or cut off my head, whatever. Just get it over with in either case…

Monday is an amazing day (Dec. 13). Not only does the Moon illuminate Jupiter and Uranus, all in Pisces, but Mercury, Mars and Pluto will all converge in practical Capricorn.
Let’s look at Moon-Jove-Uranus first, at 24 and 26 degrees of Pisces: Moon-Jupiter intensifies feeling while Jupiter magnifies everything. Uranus in the mix can bring emotional upsets, impatience, a yearning to kick over the traces and strike out for new frontiers. Uranus with the Moon can make people very rash, indeed. Therefore I am not eager to see this aspect comes around, especially with the very antagonistic Capricorn conjunctions also in play.
Now Mercury-Mars-Pluto at 4 degrees of Capricorn: This series of closely-spaced conjunction all occur around 11 pm ET. This really sounds to me like the well-connected friend (or uncle or boss) who can call up just the right person and in no time, get something straightened out that you or I would need months to do (if ever). Now, this action could be good or bad; it can also mean a personnel dept. that hands out hundreds of pink slips in a day, so keep an eye on what aspects this thing makes to natal planets. Mercury is retrograde, people, so the effects may only be temporary. Mars and Pluto also signify police and the military, so errors in communicating orders on the battlefield could occur. Pluto is power plays; who knows what kind of maneuvers the new GOP-controlled Congress might try to do.
This thing, for example, closely opposes my own natal Mars in the ninth house, and sextiles my Ascendant, so I rather expect that transit and communication issues could be fouled up. Perhaps the car won’t start in cold weather, or key emails bounce back to me as undeliverable.

Mercury conjoins Pluto in Capricorn at 6:20 pm Sunday, Dec. 5. We will certainly want to get to the bottom of things, whether ‘it’ is a mystery novel, a bookkeeping error, political machinations, or anything else. The night favors cozying up with a mystery but one that has some quality of poetic justice, like the characters get what they really deserve. You may want to settle some scores yourself, but of course that is not something we recommend.
This also denotes a mental fixity, a determination to force one’s own ideas on others, or at least get others to stop trying to force THEIR ideas on you because that ain’t gonna happen, kiddo.
Pluto also represents government, and so Mercury in aspect may indicate that some communications take place regarding your personal accounts (SS, Medicare, military service or benefits, T-bills, etc.).
Chew on this dept.: Some famous people with Mercury conjunct Pluto natally include Della Reese, Sylvester Stallone, Harry S. Truman, Stanley Kubrick, Whitney Houston, Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
The same night, Uranus goes direct at 8:50 pm Sunday, at 26 degrees, 40 minutes of Pisces. You may feel a lurch as sideways-spinning Uranus forces you to look at things from a different angle. Always full of surprises, it is just about impossible to tell how Uranus’ station will affect anyone. It squares Mars in Sag, and is semi-sextile Neptune-Chiron in Aquarius. This does not seem good; it sounds like mysterious illnesses and accidents, perhaps a flu bug. But check what aspects it makes to natal planets for clues; mine will sextile Venus so I’m hoping for love or money (preferably both, greedy pig that I am).
Kaye Shinker says that Uranus direct will have an effect on the popularity of electronic gadgets. (Perhaps a surprise i-thingie or app will take off with the public?) Additionally, she says a heliocentric grand cross composed of Venus, Saturn, Jupiter-Uranus, and Pluto, exact on Dec. 7, could cause sunspots or solar flares that play havoc with satellites and communications. See her article at http://www.astrologicalinvesting.com/html/articles_pages/articles-sunspotExplosion2010.htm,
Review the Uranus significators: electronics, computers, mechanical objects including cars, psychology, astrology, psychic phenomena, electricians, inventors, radio, all original thinkers, and everything unique.
Mars enters Capricorn, a very strong placement, at 6:49 pm, Dec. 7. Mars here natally can indicate someone with great physical energy, enough to be an athlete or performer. Mars here is also quite ambitious to get to the top of a career ladder or of a mountain. Your Cappy may be more goal oriented in December, with at least one personal project on the front burner. His first aspect is a sextile to the Moon in Pisces at 7:50 pm Saturday evening, at 3 degrees, 48 minutes Capricorn. In New York, Mars will be in the fifth house of fun and the Moon will be in the eighth house of sex and fertility. The sextile to the Moon offers a chance to express a higher value of this Mars placement, that of encouraging others to realize their ambitions, perhaps financing or offering other material support till he/she can get a business off the ground.
Mercury goes retrograde again. Oh stop that groaning. His retrograde station is at 7:04 am Friday, Dec. 10, at 5 degrees, 55 minutes Capricorn. We may see merchants start to slash prices a bit more starting that weekend, probably to help prod lookers into buying something. While the Thanksgiving weekend sales were fairly good, I think that business volume will become a bit weak and this will force merchants to soften the line on prices. They are counting their inventory and not liking how much is still in the stockroom. This is GOOD NEWS for shoppers. Just be careful that things fit, are the right size you need, right color that Suzie wants, etc etc.
Retrograde Mercury will go over the Mars-Pluto conjunction, though, affecting Dec. 10-14. Be extremely cautious about running up more credit card debt, or doing any sort of speculative buying. If you already have problems with debt, you may have to go back and settle these issues now. Seek help if you need it from non-profit credit counselors, such as at nfcc.org, incharge.org, credit.org. This will be a somewhat abbreviated column this week due to the holidays, but I promise to provide a sneak peak into the New Year of 2010 before year’s end (I hope).
Well! Did you enjoy an extra zing to your love life on Saturday, Dec. 19? That was when our dear girl Venus was square Uranus, the lord of surprises. I had thought that the square portended that relationships could come to a sudden end, and that is true if there were hard aspects in your natal chart. However, the unattached and lonely were just as likely to experience a sudden (Uranus) attraction (Venus) to a certain Other. I hope that all of the unattached readers felt a certain zing when with an interesting Other, and were able to at least get phone numbers.
Speaking of Venus, she is conjunct very-serious Pluto early Monday in Capricorn. Romantic matters could get quite serious very fast. Use caution, though, to stay out of unsavory parts of town at dangerous hours of the night, because Pluto can sure pull unpleasant surprises.
Geez, Venus is busy this month. Next she squares Saturn at 1:55 am Tuesday at 4 degrees of Capricorn and Libra. Now some of you may throw up your hands and think, oh no, now Saturn is going to kill this love affair she just started on Dec. 20! But Saturn is commitment as well as responsibility, too, so it is possible that a couple may decide to get married or otherwise cement their relationship (like with a ring).
Mercury was inconjunct Mars on Dec. 21, and with Mercury’s retrograde it repeats that aspect at 11:53 pm Thursday, Dec. 31 (only this time with both Mercury and Mars in reverse motion, OK?). The aspect will repeat when Mercury is direct again, about Jan. 26. (Mars will not go direct until March 9.) Mercury is going through a process of re-evaluating how it determines what the truth is. Mercury always likes hard data; he loves lots of numbers to crunch. Mars suggests to me that sports is somehow involved, ergo all the sports analysts and prognosticators are going to be challenged to accurately predict the outcome of bowl games, etc at this time. Some teams that were supposed to roll over meekly in a blowout, may surprise with a very spirited performance. They may not win, mind you, but they could acquit themselves very well. Likewise, persons who do not give the impression of being great physical specimens may surprise you with strength and stamina.
Hugs to all.
The Moon will be in fiery and cheerful Aries this Christmas. Expect more candles than usual, perhaps with everyone assigned a small one to hold while standing around the tree, or perhaps a line of luminarias will light the approach to your home. Expect lots of RED. Possibly your turkey or ham will be cooked on a grill or over a flame. Aries is the eternal kid, so try to think of some small traditions from your own childhood that have fallen by the way, and merit resurrecting from the past. Making cookies with the kids has never gone out of style, either, and be sure to let them decorate however they want.
Mars makes a stationary retrograde on Sunday, Dec. 20, at 8:27 am at 19 degrees 42 minutes of Leo. Fiery Leo is a great placement for fiery Mars, and Mars in Leo is very courageous; PLUS Mars is opposed by the Moon for an extra emotional boost. I have no doubt that ball games played this month have generally been of a high caliber, with teams giving it their all to fight to make the playoffs. Frankly the games this month may be better than the actual playoffs in January or the Super Bowl.
Mercury in Capricorn is inconjunct Mars in Leo on Monday. Following on the heels of the Mars station, this is very interesting to say the least. Many of us will have to adjust our convictions and beliefs, especially those who are most attached to them! Listen to others with an open mind and at least a wait-and-see attitude. Capricorns and Leos are most involved in this aspect.
Venus sextiles Jupiter and Neptune on Sunday night; Venus wants to give the very best quality gifts and with Jupiter-Neptune involved, may blow the holiday budget to smithereens. Keep to your shopping list! Hide your credit cards from yourself if you have to. Venus enters Capricorn at 1:17 pm Friday, Christmas Day. This gives a practical yet high-quality tilt to gifts exchanged this day. Venus here also tends to be rather materialistic, and to use others for their own ends. However, a more developed Venus here is a master of knowing what is appropriate for every social situation; and with the square to Saturn, may become quite the go-to person for rules (Saturn) of etiquette (Venus).
Mercury stations retrograde on Saturday at 9:38 am, at about 21 degrees Capricorn. Check whether that makes any aspects to natal planets in your chart, and double-check any papers dealing with related issues. This can of course snarl routine communications. Use delivery confirmation on emails and packages. It’s interesting that this occurs on the busiest day for after-holiday sales and also for exchanges. So make sure that if you are exchanging a shirt, for example, that it actually fits you or matches the item you plan to wear it with.
The Sun in Sag squares Uranus mid-morning on Monday; this can lead to arguments or accidents due to impatience. However, your urge to break out of a rut is ‘good thing’ because you can luck onto some new opportunities. Shake up your life in less stressful ways by taking a different route on your commute, or stopping in at a shop or gallery you have been curious about.
Venus in Sag trines Mars in Leo on Thursday morning. Assertiveness combined with diplomacy is rewarded. Try a little Leo charm, and if you don’t have any, fake it. Also relationships between men and women are harmonious; even breakups are amicable. Just discuss whatever issues you have in an adult manner instead of playing games. And Venus later squares Uranus on Saturday night. Ouch, this may push some couples into splitsville if they are not careful. But it can also mean impulse spending, or if you have a lucky transit, a nice windfall.
Mars will make a retrograde station next Sunday, Dec. 20 at 8:27 am. It will be at 19 degrees 42 minutes of Leo.
