Hello, astrology students! Today’s lesson is about how to look at Eclipse charts. Actually I will talk about a way of looking at a Solar Eclipse, and a way of looking at a Lunar Eclipse.
The history of astrology tells us that the first recorded observation of a Solar Eclipse was in China, in 2154 BC. In fact, there was an eclipse that year on Oct. 12, but unfortunately the official astrologers were asleep at the wheel, so to speak. We quote:
“At that time Hi and Ho corrupted their principles and abandoned themselves to wine. They neglected their offices, forsook their posts, began to confuse the celestial laws, and ignored their faculty. Consequently, when in the third month of autumn . . . the people ran afoot in general consternation. Hi and Ho were dead to their duties of office, not having known or heard of it, and were stupidly perplexed as to the celestial signs, so that they committed a crime which former rulers proscribed against. The regulations in regard to eclipses say: being before the time, the astronomers are to be killed without respite, and being behind time, they are to be slain without reprieve (Sepharial, p. 32-33).”
First, the Solar Eclipse. This method is SOLELY for Solar Eclipses. The proponent of this method is Dave Roell of AstroAmerica aka Astrology Center of America. You can look for a more detailed explanation of his method in the June 11 issue of his newsletter at his website, AstroAmerica dot com.
The first step is to cast a chart for the Solar Eclipse set for your locality – or where you will be at the time of the Solar Eclipse. Take care to convert the time, which is probably given as Eastern Time or Pacific Time, to your own time zone. Note carefully where both the Sun-Moon and the Nodes fall.
Dave notes that Judith Hill notes that solar eclipses are polarized along the lines of the node. I might add that total eclipses occur when the node is 5 degrees or less away from the sun, and partial eclipses occur when the node is more than 5 degrees from the sun. As a general rule, anyway. So, in other words, says Dave, eclipses are really more like hyper nodes – maybe I should capitalize that like this: Hyper Nodes.
Dave simplifies his key to solar eclipses like this: FIRST, note the HOUSE that the eclipse falls in; this will clue you in to the SETTING of whatever event is triggered by the eclipse. SECOND, “convert the SIGN of the eclipse to the house on the “natural” or Aries rising wheel.” The sign will clue you in to the kind of EVENT is triggered by the eclipse. If the sun and the node fall in different houses, the node is preferred – BUT you will have to look at both and make a judgment on which is more active.
Also bear in mind which node the eclipse occurs near, because this will clue you in to whether to expect gains or losses. A North Node eclipse will tend to bring you things or bring a new beginning, and while a South Node eclipse will tend to take something away, or end a situation.
A good example is the eclipse before the Wall Street meltdown of 2008. There was a solar eclipse on Aug. 8, 2008 at 6:14 am; set the chart for New York City. The South Node is in the first house, affecting the whole world. It is in Leo, and Leo (in a natural, Aries-rising chart) is ruler of the fifth house of speculation, in other words things like the stock market – which duly crashed that fall.
I do have a little trouble applying it to the Aurora, CO Batman shooting, tho. The shooting occurred in a movie theatre on July 20, 2012 at 12:38 am to 12:45 am MDT. The Solar Eclipse prior to the shooting was on May 20, 2012 at 5:23 pm MDT. I have cast a chart for the eclipse, so have a look.
The lights are in the eighth house, as one might expect. The eighth house indicates death only sometimes, but here it is literal. Other possibilities would have included beginnings and endings, intense situations, absolute decisions (meaning ones that cannot be taken back), money given to others to manage, a spouse’s money, pooled funds of all kinds.
It occurred in the sign of Gemini, which falls in the third house in an Aries-rising chart. The third house rules daily life, errands, siblings, etc. Well that does not seem to fit. However, it would rule malls, I think, since basic shopping for necessities is part of one’s daily life. Also, look at what is actually IN the third house in this eclipse chart: bad boy Pluto. And it so happens that Pluto trined Mars on May 16, an ominous transiting aspect if ever there was one. Mars is in the eleventh house of groups of people, so I would probably have avoided hanging around crowds.
Let’s move on to looking at some lunar eclipses. I feel that lunar eclipses are more personal than solar eclipses. We can get some idea of what the eclipse will mean to us personally by looking at the chart. At the same time, one has to bear in mind that many times the effects of an eclipse can be so subtle, and be so gradual, that we may never link the eclipse to a growing interest in photography or music, for example, or to meeting someone who later proves significant in the course one’s life takes.
I would like to look at the eclipses before the assassination of President Kennedy. Rose Lineman kindly provides both solar and lunar eclipse charts, set for both Washington, DC and for Dallas. The node is in the eighth house in all four. It hardly seems like Pres. Kennedy would have been any safer at home! For the record, Jupiter’s placement usually indicates where one is safe. In the case of JFK, Jove is in the fifth house in the eclipse charts, which would suggest that he might have been safe in an amusement park, on Wall Street, in a casino, somewhere with children or artwork.
Yet one must note that the eclipses set for Washington have Sagittarius on the ascendants, while the ones set for Dallas have Scorpio on the ascendants. This alone indicates a more intense cast to the events of the Dallas trip. Also some aspects tie in more sharply to the angles, and volatile planets are much closer to the Midheaven – which is itself a critical degree – in the Dallas charts.
For example, chart rulers Mars and Pluto occupy the tenth house. Rose Lineman notes that Uranus at 2 degrees Virgo is not only nearly atop the Midheaven but is also conjunct the fixed star Regulus, representing “worldly position and power”; that Uranus is almost atop both MC and Regulus does seem to signify the sudden change in who holds the reins of power in Washington.
One cannot isolate an eclipse chart from the natal or progressed charts of the principals involved. For example, Lineman notes that Kennedy suffered from the fact that progressed Moon, progressed Mars, and progressed Jupiter were all in the natal eighth house at the time of his death, AND since they were in Gemini, they squared the lunar eclipse Uranus, Pluto and Mars (in that order) in Virgo.
So you see there are layers upon layers of connections between the events, the eclipses, and all the natal and progressed charts of the principal players involved. I encourage you to play with the chart data given below to make whatever combination charts occur to you. Try making triple- and quadruple-ringed charts.

As I mentioned last week, on Sunday we have a Solar Eclipse at 0 degrees Gemini at 7:23 pm EDT. And BTW we will have two New Moons in Gemini this month, a very rare occurrence. Along with the emphasis on communications implied by a Gemini eclipse, we will also be seeing Venus cross the face of the Sun in June. And that occurrence has been associated with advances in communications. So keep a keen eye peeled on the headlines for anything related to faster messaging or transport, or possibly a faster conversion to more economical modes of transportation as the Age of Oil dwindles to a close. See also notes last week.
The Sun enters Gemini at 11:16 am Sunday. Gemini natives have a lot of nervous energy which needs an outlet. They need a variety of activities and exercise. Many of them have two different careers, several hobbies, a couple of boyfriends, virtually a double life – and they like it that way. Assets: adaptable, versatile, witty, lighthearted. Weaknesses: sometimes cannot focus on any one thing to completion, spreads self too thin, distracted, shallow. Often smokes to keep hands busy. Would do better to take up knitting or other craft work. Famous people with Sun in Gemini include Judy Garland, Prince Philip, philosopher Sartre, Richard Wagner, JFK, James Arness, Walt Whitman, Thomas Mann, Bob Hope, David and Laurence Rockefeller, Hubert Humphrey.
Mercury enters Gemini at 7:12 am Thursday. People with this placement in their natal charts can collect amazing amounts of trivia. Can be a perpetual student, can enjoy discussing a range of ideas with a wide variety of people. More mature types can handle being teachers or professors. The mind is quick, but one can omit a key premise and then end up with a wobbly conclusion. Also manual dexterity may be emphasized, such as needed by the seamstress, carpenter, secretary, crafter. Stressful transits to Mercury in Gemini can lead to mental strain, overwork, or even breakdowns. May need a more grounded partner in life to see to it that you keep regular hours and get some air.

The Sun in Scorpio squares Neptune at 28 degrees Aquarius at 3:42 pm Sunday. Hard aspects between Sun and Neptune generally make it difficult for us to see ourselves clearly; maybe we have some self-delusion we cling to and which leaves us vulnerable to unscrupulous sales people. So get a reality check before you write a check. With some of us, the Sun brings unwelcome publicity to things we would rather remained a deep, dark secret.
The Sun enters Sag at 11:08 am Tuesday. Happy birthday to all the little centaurs. Sun in Sag is optimistic (sometimes unrealistically so), has faith in the future, wants to be part of the big picture, and tends to inspire others with their optimism exuberance. Has the ability to be brilliant but rarely disciplines self long enough to really master anything. Loves the outdoors and the active life. This love of activity may also be expressed in careers in firefighting or other emergency services. Famous Centaurs include Mary Martin, Frank Sinatra, James Thurber, Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, Joe DiMaggio, Charles de Gaulle, and siblings Caroline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr.
Thanksgiving features a Scorpio moon for most of the day, presumably including sitting everyone down to the feast. Scorpio is most likely to actually host the family feast; the stuffing might include oysters, and the table have a crab salad. Scorpio lends a more spiritual mood to the day; we may be truly thankful to have everyone together. Black Friday features the Moon in Sag, appropriate for shoppers buying multiples of every item and probably overshooting their budgets.
However, bad news for merchants lies in the form of Mercury going retrograde early on Thursday (at 20 degrees of Sag). We usually enjoy a bit of boost from Mercury going direct sometime during the Christmas shopping season — and that is not in evidence this year as least not until Mercury goes direct on the night of Dec. 13. Merchants will be frantic to get shoppers to actually part with some money; I see heavy price slashing throughout the period. I might mention that there is a grass-roots movement to make Sat., Nov. 26 a “Buy Local” event. See Facebook for details about that at: https://www.facebook.com/SmallBusinessSaturday?extlink=ps-gabmd-2011SBS-GoogleSearch
Venus in Sag sextiles Neptune at 28 degrees of Aquarius at 8:52 pm Thursday. We squint a bit at the ones we love and overlook their faults. Good for creativity and expressing universal ideals.
Venus is again active on Saturday night. She squares Uranus at zero degrees of Aries at 9:27 pm. I think I’ve warned you about the squares before. One can become entranced by foreigners or unusual people, generally to no avail as the parties repel each other as much as they attract each other. Any relationship is generally short-lived but enjoy it while it lasts, hon. And I speak from experience.
Venus enters hard-headed and practical Capricorn at 7:36 am Saturday. Venus in the sign of the goat is practical, a bit of social climber, and insists on quality goods. Can be very good at mastering etiquette at the highest levels of international protocol all the way down to the local club. Some have a gift for helping others see HOW to manifest their goals.

Readers can follow not only their Sun sign horoscope but also the sign of their Ascendant for further clues to how your week will develop. Also note: some aspects are exact on a weekend but may find opportunity for expression on the Friday or Monday nearest the exact aspect. Times given are in Eastern Standard Time or Eastern Daylight Savings Time, depending on the season.
ARIES – March 20-April 19 – The solar eclipse in your solar ninth house may signal a long trip, or at least a breaking away from the mindset that you grew up with. Your consciousness may expand thru travel, reading, formal or informal study, or personal experiences. You may even have some kind of adventure, so keep a journal. The square to Mars may bring fevers, or new tools to use in your work. Mercury going retrograde in your solar ninth house may signal mixups in legal matters or having to redo everything with a new lawyer, book editor, or website.
TAURUS – April 20-May 20 – The solar eclipse in your solar eighth house accents your hidden talents as a practical alchemist, a healer, or a metaphysical master. You may help warring parties arrive at common values to heal their relationship. You may take up a sport, game or dancing. Mercury going retrograde in your solar eighth house may signal mixups in wills, joint accounts, or any pooled resources.
GEMINI – May 21-June 20 – The solar eclipse in your solar seventh house accents relationships and partnerships; the partner may be a foreigner or someone quite unusual. The importance of honoring commitments and contracts will be impressed on you, possibly in connection with work done on your home. Mercury going retrograde in your solar seventh house may signal mixups in public appearances or in communicating with your mate.
CANCER – June 21-July 22 – The solar eclipse in your solar sixth house activates your ability to help others realize a good mind-body balance. You may become more active, more outdoorsy, or even take a long trip. You may talk more about health matters, cars, sports, etc. Mercury going retrograde in your solar sixth house also accents the need to pay attention to health matters.
LEO – July 23-Aug. 22 – The solar eclipse in your solar fifth house accents your ability to teach people how to play, how to enjoy life, and how to express themselves creatively. At the same time you will need to avoid impulse spending that sabotages your budget. Mercury going retrograde in your solar fifth house may signal mixups in stage productions, having to start over with a creative project, or a child needing help in school.
VIRGO – Aug. 23-Sept. 22 – The Moon is in Virgo as the week begins, where it stays till Sunday night. Sunday morn you focus on feeling that your efforts are not appreciated, much less reciprocated. Instead, train loved ones to say thank you and please. The supper hour is very pleasant, possibly spent at a local restaurant. The solar eclipse in your solar fourth house activates your ability to help others get centered within themselves, the source of any real sense of security. You may also become much more focused on goals, like a samurai warrior. Mercury going retrograde in your solar fourth house may signal mixups with family members, or appliances going on the fritz.
LIBRA – Sept. 23-Oct. 22 – The Moon is in Libra from 8:16 pm Sun.-Tues. night. Do not let your mate get your goat Sunday night; he is unsettled from the Uranus transit. Instead, try to calm and assure him. Monday morning resolve to master yourself no matter what before going in to work. You really are your own master, and you serve whom you will. A sibling may compliment you Tuesday. You may have to work to keep your mood up at times, but Tuesday pm may present a happy surprise. Treat yourself to a movie that night, with popcorn. The solar eclipse in your third house helps you keep things circulating; you may start to convey information to others that they need to know. Mercury going retrograde in your solar third house may signal mixups in every kind of communication, especially with siblings.
SCORPIO – Oct. 23-Nov. 21 – The Moon is in Scorpio from 8:58 pm Tuesday till Thursday night. You may benefit from alternative medicine Tuesday night. Try not to go over the top about anything. A bit of friendly competition Wednesday morn gives you a boost. The holiday Thursday puts you in a spiritual mood. My only caveat is don’t indulge in foods/drinks you know you are sensitive to, no matter how gorgeous they look. A solar eclipse in your second house of money helps you manifest what you want — once you know what it is you want. Mercury going retrograde in your solar second house may signal errors in bank statements, or in balancing your account, or delays in crediting deposits.
SAGITTARIUS – Nov. 22-Dec. 21 – The Moon is in Sag from 8:57 pm Thursday till Saturday night. You get a burst of that “Born to be Wild” energy Thursday night. You benefit from a New Moon at 2 degrees Sag at 1:10 am Friday. This is a Solar Eclipse, so note developments in the next several months, especially in relation to your search for truth. The eclipse features a square to Mars (you are forced to act, possibly in an aggressive manner) and a trine to Uranus (breaking free from societal boundaries).
CAPRICORN – Dec. 22-Jan. 19 – The Moon is in Capricorn from 10:05 pm Saturday thru the weekend. The solar eclipse in your solar twelfth house helps you let go of trying to control the minutiae of others’ lives. You learn to listen to that quiet inner voice and achieve a measure of serenity. You may be forced to it, though, if your demands on others lead them to excommunicate you from their lives. You may take a crash course in something, or devour every book on a topic in your desire to know everything about it. Mercury going retrograde in your solar twelfth house may signal that it is you who shoots yourself in the foot with misstatements and errors in calculation.
AQUARIUS – Jan. 20-Feb. 17 – The solar eclipse in your solar eleventh house may activate involvement in humanitarian organizations, as you help others realize their hopes for a better life. You can inspire, and your own efforts prod others to join in. You may be thrust into emergency situations and find out what you’re made of — and arriving at a renewed passion for life. Mercury going retrograde in your solar eleventh house may signal mixups re club meetings, lost minutes of prior meetings, or friends who have to cancel out of gatherings.
PISCES – Feb. 18-March 19 – The solar eclipse in your solar tenth house may activate involvement in community affairs ranging from the PTA to politics to the church to activism. Your inner rebel finds an outlet, but hopefully not in the form of tossing out your mate or other loved ones. Mercury going retrograde in your solar tenth house may signal mixups in career stuff like interviews that go badly, or glowing promises that are not carried out.

The Moon, exalted in Taurus, is conjunct Jupiter at 4 degrees Taurus at 1:07 am Sunday. What a wonderful opportunity for night owls especially, but anyone can light a candle and make a wish for their fondest desire late the night before. You can put your case to others with positive results, especially with women (so this is actually a fine time to propose if you are involved with someone). If this aspect affects your fourth house, it favors moves to a new residence.
The Moon trines powerful Pluto at 6 degrees Capricorn at 5:22 am Sunday. Whenever I see the Moon and Pluto, I think, “silver charm” because the Moon rules silver, and Pluto is power objects and overcoming the perceived limitations (power vs. powerlessness) of one’s life. Your emotions may be very intense, difficult to handle; but at the same time perhaps you need the release of music, art or journaling or whatever works for you.
The Sun in Cancer squares Uranus at 4 degrees Aries at 6:13 am Sunday. What an eventful morning, astrologically speaking. This aspect will shake you out of your rut, like it or not. Go ahead and break your routine, take a different route home, try a new restaurant. Just be advised that Uranus can cause accidents whether from distraction or whatever, so do drive defensively and alertly. If upset (related to the Moon-Pluto trine above), it is best NOT to drive at all.
We have a New Moon Friday, July 1, at 4:54 am, at 9 degrees, 12 minutes of Cancer. This is a partial Solar Eclipse, the partner to the total lunar eclipse of June 15 at 24 degrees Sag. The Moon is conjunct Sun of course, and square Saturn in Libra. This may be a tough time for many of us, not only because of the square to Saturn but because the last major aspect was Moon opposite Pluto. So the powers that be are inclined to say no, no and no. Minnesota is threatening to shut down government offices in a standoff over the budget, and this eclipse does not bode well for a last-minute compromise. I regret I do not have any chart for the state, so I have no idea of the specifics of the transits.
Mercury enters Leo at 1:38 am Saturday. Mercury in Leo is quite a persuasive speaker, with the combination of Mercury (ruling the mind) and Leo (ruling the heart). This Leo may be a fine leader in politics or the military, being well suited to command. You may write (and perform) speeches or plays, or teach, or emcee. The only drawback is sometimes a tendency to boast and brag — not that you don’t have anything worth bragging about, but it is just unseemly. Useful in a job interview, though.
The Sun in Cancer squares Saturn at 10 degrees Libra at 8:17 pm Saturday. Sun square Saturn symbolizes frustrations and not being able to exert one’s will in a given situation. Patience, in patience one possesses one’s soul, to coin a phrase. I know, we all want everything now, but some things just need time to germinate and grown to the point where we can harvest them. This aspect is preceded by 22 minutes by a Moon-Mercury conjunction, meaning that some of us will probably ask a favor of a friend or relative. Well, with Saturn square the Sun, it is ‘no can do.’ Wait for a better opportunity to ask your favor. I think that some of us will be dealing with separations and endings, but it is only for a blink in time.
Looking ahead to the long holiday weekend, the Moon is in Leo on the third and Fourth, expressing the fun of fireworks and parades and any events oriented towards the children in the family. On the Fourth, Venus enters Cancer in the wee hours, enhancing the love of country, home and family. We will enjoy family outings and feel a tug at the heartstrings when the flag passes by in a parade. Venus in Cancer also suggests that many of us will just stay at home, cocooning inside our beloved homes (if we still have one after these last few years of a disastrous mortgage situation and foreclosures). Venus trines Neptune, affirming our hopes for upholding the best ideals that this country has ever embraced.

What did I tell ya about Dec. 26 and the wipeout planet Pluto?? The Sun-Pluto conjunction occurred on Sunday night at 5 degrees of Capricorn, right on my third house cusp. My computer was attacked that night and I had to shut it down and reboot to factory condition. It wiped out my purchased software, which I had to reinstall, and also the column for this week which was about half-done. Dunce that I am, I did not keep backing it up as I went along. That is changing right here and now, you bet.
So anyway, a Solar Eclipse helps usher in the New Year belatedly on Jan. 4, at 4:03 am and at 13 degrees, 39 minutes of Capricorn. Also exact that day are a Venus-Neptune square (in love with love and not seeing the other person realistically), a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction (boon for electronic and technical breakthroughs), Venus trine that Jove-Uranus combo, Moon square Saturn (some hard-headed realism and practicality), and Moon conjunct Mars in Capricorn. Whew. This is some lunation, and you don’t often see so many EXACT aspects going on the same day as an eclipse. There is a lot of cardinal energy along with that megawatt conjunction in Pisces. It reminds me of that line about “go ahead and build your castles in the air, but then build a foundation under them.” The cardinal energy (Sun, Moon, Saturn, Mars) is going to buckle down and get some things done.
Venus enters Sag at 7:30 am Friday. Venus in Scorpio was very intense, but now she is looking for some adventure, possibly would like to take a trip or go skiing.
The Sun in Capricorn squares Saturn at almost 17 degrees Libra at 9 am Friday, This is probably going to be very frustrating for the Capricorns with natal planets at 17 degrees. Cardinal signs really hate anyone telling them ‘no’ or even ‘later’. However, on the positive side, both signs will be able to muster the fortitude and discipline to meet any goal.
The New Moon Solar Eclipse was 3:40 pm EDT, Sunday, July 11 at 19 degrees, 24 minutes of Cancer the Crab. It features a Mercury-Jupiter trine in the early morning, followed by a Moon-Mars sextile a few minutes before the eclipse is exact. Also Mercury in Leo is inconjunct Pluto in Capricorn, and the Moon in Cancer is inconjunct Ceres in Sag. Mercury-Jupiter favors sales for one thing, and since it is in fire signs, I would expect that fashions in warm colors will find favor. Gosh, if you have ANY natal planets in fire signs, try wearing red clothes or carrying a red purse, and see if it lifts your mood.
Venus entered Virgo on July 10, and proceeds to oppose Chiron and is inconjunct Uranus in Aries on the same day. She also is inconjunct Jupiter early Tuesday, and trines Pluto in Capricorn at midday. Venus possibly offers relief for those who venture into unconventional (Uranus) health treatments (Chiron). So feel free to try massage, craniosacral therapy, meditation, color or aromatherapy, or any of the myriad other New Agey therapies. Attitude (Aries) adjustment (inconjunct) can also make a huge difference in what you attract into your life. I can recommend you give a listen to the very interesting lectures by Seymour Segnit. If you do, you will very likely get a shift in your life. (He has a website, is affiliated with Life University, and there are YouTube clips of him.)
